Glow Guide: Tranexamic Acid
Tranexamic acid is one of my favorite examples of an ingredient that sounds very clinical, but makes sense once you understand what it’s doing in the skin. It’s most often used in skincare formulas focused on uneven tone, dullness, and the look of lingering discoloration.
To understand tranexamic acid, it helps to think about pigment as a communication process. Melanin is made by pigment-producing cells called melanocytes, but those cells don’t work in isolation. They respond to signals from the surrounding skin environment — including UV exposure, visible light, heat, irritation, and inflammation. When those signals are heightened, the skin may produce more pigment in certain areas, which can show up as uneven tone, dark spots, or patchy-looking discoloration.
Tranexamic acid is interesting because it doesn’t exfoliate the skin, and it doesn’t simply “bleach” pigment. Instead, it works earlier in the pigment pathway by helping quiet some of the signals that can encourage excess melanin production. More specifically, tranexamic acid is known to interfere with the plasminogen/plasmin pathway. When this pathway is activated in the skin, it can increase chemical messengers such as arachidonic acid and prostaglandins, which may tell melanocytes to make more pigment.
That’s why I think of tranexamic acid as a tone-balancing ingredient. It helps support a more even-looking complexion by reducing the appearance of discoloration at the signaling level, rather than by physically polishing the skin like an exfoliating acid would.
This also makes it a nice partner for other brightening and barrier-supporting ingredients. Tranexamic acid is often paired with niacinamide, vitamin C derivatives, licorice root, centella, hyaluronic acid, and gentle moisturizers. Together, these ingredients can help support skin that looks brighter, calmer, and more even over time.
A tranexamic acid serum or treatment usually fits here:
Cleanser → Toner or essence → Tranexamic acid serum or treatment → Moisturizer → Sunscreen in the morning
If you’re using tranexamic acid in toner pads or a mask, follow the product directions and keep the rest of the routine simple. You don’t need to stack every tone-focused ingredient at once. In fact, skin often does better when you introduce one new product at a time and give it a few weeks before adding more.
One important note: tranexamic acid and sunscreen belong together. If you’re working on the appearance of uneven tone or discoloration, sunscreen is one of the most important steps in the routine. Without it, the same light exposure that contributes to uneven pigment can keep triggering the cycle you’re trying to calm.
Tranexamic acid isn’t an instant fix, and it’s not meant to make skin lighter than its natural tone. The goal is a complexion that looks more balanced, clear, and consistent. Used patiently and paired with daily sun protection, it can be a thoughtful addition to a brightening routine.
